Opus | Animation

Our senior trainer, Angie Taylor is a working animator, illustrator and motion graphic designer.

“it’s important for me to keep working at my day job – as well as being a training provider. About 50% of my work is training but I still take on a few creative jobs each year in order to test my skills and to develop new techniques. “

This animation was commisioned by Bright Marbles – a Silicon Valley company with an intruiging product, Opus. Opus is a product that uses artificial intellegence to help inventors to articulate and develop their products and ideas. Its a very difficult product to explain as it is quite unique.

“The company were looking for a new way to communicate the benefits of their product. They had previously used video of people talking about the product but felt that this was dull and did not get the concept of the product.

I directed and managed the project. I wanted a style of artwork that was loose, imaginative and humorous. So I decided to collaborate with illustrator, Belle Mellor on this project. I’ve worked with Belle before and I love the loose, freedom, humour and inventiveness of her work.

Together we brainstormed a few ideas, both sketching out a few core concepts. We then developed a script and storyboard based on the ideas becoming characters on a journey through a pipeline. Opus being the heroic, angelic character that helped the ideas on their journey from conception to final product production.

The first stage involved cleaning up the hand drawn images and splitting them into layers in Photoshop. Working out the correct scale of the images was an important factor. When you work in 3D, you tend to zoom in and out of the images. I had to ensure that all line work would look equal during the animation. It’s also important to remove any marks and backgrounds before animation takes place. I used Select and Mask and the Content-aware tools to adapt the drawings for this.

“I used Select & Mask in Photoshop to clean the layers, ready for animation in After Effects.”

I built a 3D pipeline in MasterpieceVR, using my trusty HTC Vive headset. I created the entire project on my Gigabyte Aero laptop. It’s a powerful beast with an on board NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 which coped admirably with all the VR and 3D rendering I threw at it.

This was all imported into Cinema 4D where I used the Sketch and Toon features to match Belle’s hand-drawn look & feel. I then imported the Cinema 4D file into After Effects via the Cineware plugin. In After Effects I composited Belle’s drawings and 2D stop-frame animations into the 3D scene. I also added some of my own animations here, animating some of the characters using the Rubberhose scripts and taking advantage of After Effects new Master properties to help make the complicated structure easier to manage. There’s a tutorial on Master Properties in my course about Rubberhose animation in After Effects here.

I then brought in musician, Lucy Edwards to help with the music. Together we came up with a humourous melody. Lucy played all the parts on my Roland W30 keyboard. I edited and produced it in Apple’s Garageband. I then added a few sound effects in Adobe Audition. I edited the Audio and the Sound effects to the animation in Adobe Premiere Pro. I found that the the Auto-ducking features to make this process failry quick and easy. The final voiceover was added at this satge so that it fitted the animation perfectly.”

Charlotte Gray  | Motion Graphic Designer at Mineral Creative

I spent two days with Angie at the Creative Cabin and it was the best course I have ever been on!

We spent most of the two days focussed on After Effects, with a great basic overview of Cinema 4D thrown in. Before the course I was a bit of a nervous After Effects user. Angie gave me a really thorough overview of After Effects and it’s capabilities and made me feel really comfortable using and exploring the program. Since completing the course I now feel very happy using After Effects by myself to create animations, motion graphics and videos. And best of all, it has given me the confidence to be able to ‘figure things out’ and tinker in After Effects, which is great fun.

Angie is very knowledgeable and a great teacher. I would highly recommend Creative Cabin. I came away feeling hugely inspired and couldn’t wait to get started creating After Effects projects. Thanks Angie.

Having little time to develop and enrich my animation skills I needed “made to measure” classes. I searched and found Angie Taylor, offering personal well-structured coaching. I flew from Montreal for five days of one-to-one, bespoke, After Effect and Premiere Pro training in Angie’s Creative Cabin. An ideal cozy summer cottage-like training set up. I has access to a top-of-range iMac, many large screens and accessories. It also has a queen-size bed, kitchen and shower room. All overlooking the English Channel.

Angie is a passionate animator, motion graphic designer and is a skilled trainer. Moreover she has written the book, “Design Essentials for the Motion Media Artist” and she also writes and produces tutorials for Lynda.com. She knows how to communicate and make the content easy to digest. Her vast experience has helped me go to the second level of animation and has enriched my pedagogical skills.

My training and “séjour” in the very unique Creative cabin was worth the trip: amazing intensive coaching with an exotic vacation twist.

Merci Angie

Both times I’ve visited the Creative Cabin have been really great experiences. I went there to learn the fundamentals of After Effects for motion graphics and animation and I came away having learnt an incredible amount and, most importantly, confident I could put it into practice.

Angie is an absolute legend. She was really interested in exactly what I wanted to learn and the kind of things I aspired to create. After Effects is vast but everything I learnt felt relevant and Angie put a lot of effort into tailoring the training to my needs. She’s really lovely, approachable and super knowledgeable.

We had a lot of fun practising character rigging (With DUIK)and Angie demystified things like Track Mattes, 3D cameras, and expressions. After Effects definitely feels much less intimidating.

On both of my visits I stayed overnight in the cabin which has a brilliant setup. For me, it was nice getting out of London and spending the time to really immerse myself in everything I was learning. The cabin is really comfortable and peaceful, views out to sea, and, should you wish, there’s the opportunity of practising the skills you’ve learnt during the day on the iMac.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Creative Cabin. It’s the best training experience I’ve had and I’m planning another visit this year.

1-2-1 After Effects training

The 1-2-1 After Effects training course at Creative Cabin was just what I needed to speed up my work in After Effects, which I’m using more and more alongside Premiere Pro for video production. The course gave me a better understanding of the interface of After Effects. I also learned about optimizing the workflow for making different kind of graphics for various projects, from simple web videos to complex documentaries.

Angie is an experienced graphic artist as well as a tutor, who knows how to communicate in both a relaxed and professional manner. The preparation for the course is also worth a mention. Angie provided me with an online survey for the evaluation of my level of experience. As a result of this survey, the course material was customized and prepared with focus on my own needs. Nevertheless there was room for making changes to the program during the two days course.

The location of the Creative Cabin, in a quiet suburb of the beautiful city of Brighton, adds the final touch. For me it was just a matter of jumping on the bus outside my hotel, enjoying the ride through the city and walk for just a few minutes to the Cabin from the bus stop.

I think it’s of high value to take a “custom made” course like this. As soon as I arrived back home I was already utilizing my new knowledge on my current projects at SIGVA media.
